Beginning Sound Scoops!

Teaching Beginning Sounds is one of the very first steps in learning how to read.  I take this task very seriously and try my best to make it FUN!  When a child can master beginning sounds, it really builds confidence in the journey to learning how to read.

At the Moffatt house we are gearing up for our Ready2Read program this coming Fall by reviewing, reinforcing and mastering our beginning sounds.  Since we LOVE ice cream, I decided to make some Beginning Sounds Scoops!

This is such an engaging activity since it allows children to color, cut and paste!  The more hands-on and interactive, the better.

Although Sophia already knows her Beginning Sounds, this has really been a good confidence builder. I am a firm believer in reinforcing and mastering skills before moving forward.  Needless to say...she LOVED her printable!  Who doesn't love ice cream?  With each ice cream scoop, she practiced sounding out the word.  For example, she would say "/b/../b/...bird goes on the B ice cream cone!"

I am not sure if you can tell or not, but this little honey is VERY serious about her cutting and coloring!

I LOVE the fact that learning can be FUN and still meet Common Core Standards!  This packet meets the following Common Core Standards:

K.RFS.1-Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.

KRFS.3-Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

a. Demonstrate basic knowledge of letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or most frequent sound for each consonant.

We are also using our Beginning Sounds (Color, Cut and Paste) Packet to reinforce beginning sounds.

Coloring, cutting, pasting AND ice cream...it can't get better than that!
